The coursework component of this module is a piece of publicity material/ leaflet documenting the role and specialisms (haematology, microbiology etc.) of Biomedical Scientists. This should be in the format of a ‘public information leaflet’ such as you might find in a doctor’s surgery or hospital outpatients department. The exact format of this leaflet is entirely up to you and there have been a variety of leaflet formats produced over the years, some in the form of a small booklet, some in the form of a single, bi or tri-folded sheet of A4 with content on both sides. Any of these are perfectly acceptable, what is not required is an essay/ several pages of dense text. The leaflet should be eye-catching and something that you yourself might consider picking up to read if you had 10/15 minutes of spare time. It should be written in lay terms, such that a member of the general public could understand it (i.e. not too much ‘jargon’ or abbreviations) but should not be condescending/ patronising to the intended audience. Images are good and add to the ‘attractiveness’ of the leaflet providing they are relevant and ‘professional’ (i.e. no images of ‘mad scientists’ etc.) – remember that this leaflet is introducing the role of the biomedical scientist and the pathology laboratories to patients and as such should instil confidence in our profession.
The publicity material/ leaflet must be well structured, coherent, written in good English and approximately 2000 words in length (not including the list of references – see below). The material should be informative, engaging and demonstrate full comprehension and considered discussion of the role of the diagnostic pathology laboratory, the various specialisms within Biomedical Science, and the Biomedical Scientists who fulfil those roles. There should also be a section which documents the roles of the IBMS and the HCPC and also information as to the qualifications required to become a Biomedical Scientist and how the reader might go about becoming a biomedical scientist if they are interesed on doing so. Indications of (or links to) appropriate further sources of information would also be good.
The publicity material/ leaflet should demonstrate the integration of information from a wide range of appropriate reference sources. Referencing for this assessment should take the form of the Vancouver system with numbers in text to indicate a specific source and a list of those reference sources included as a separate page at the end of the assessment. Please include this reference list as part of the main document, not as a separate document otherwise you will not be able to upload it. Vancouver is a different style of referencing to the Westminster Harvard system you will be used to using, but is ideal for assignments such as this where is less disruptive to the appearance of the final document.
