Overview
Part of the U.S. Department of Education, “[t]he National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only assessment that measures what U.S. students know and can do in various subjects across the nation, states, and in some urban districts. Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, the NAEP has provided important information about how students are performing academically since 1969” (“About NAEP”). According to the 2015 NAEP statistics for high school seniors, no racial group of high school seniors is more than 50% proficient in Mathematics and Reading. Per The Nation’s Report Card of 2019, “[t]he average Reading score for twelfth-grade students [high school seniors] was 2 points lower in 2019 compared to the last reading assessment in 2015,” and the average Mathematics score was “not significantly different” (“2015 | Mathematics & Reading at Grade 12”; “GRADE 12 READING PERFORMANCE COMPARED TO 2015”). This statistic means that on a standard grading scale of 1 to 100, all racial groups would score an “F” grade.
Imaginary Scenario
Appalled by the statistics in the Overview, parents of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have taken over LAUSD. They have elected a new Board of Education consisting only of parents, and these parents have decided to implement this radically different educational plan for their children: “Teachers Are Not Babysitters: Why Education Should End at the 9th Grade” (2022) by Stephanie Wynne.

Write a 1,000-1,500-word term paper (4-6 pages). In it, explain how Stephanie Wynne’s educational plan differs from the traditional educational plan: how public school students are educated. Then, determine whether renowned educator Paulo Freire and J.D. Salinger’s Teddy from the eponymous 1953 short story would approve of this plan. Finally, share your own opinion about this plan. If implemented, how will this plan change our society? What will the lives of students and their parents be like; will this plan set up students for personal and professional success?
